Forty-Eight Students Receive AP Recognition Status
Friday, August 31, 2012

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

Morristown West High School had 48 students to achieve AP recognition status.

Twenty-one students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students qualify for at least 15 hours of college credit or one semester of college.

Six Students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students qualify for at least 12 hours of college credit.

Seventeen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams, with grades of 3 or higher. These students have qualified for at least 9 hours of college credit.

Four students reached National AP Scholar status, Most in the history of West High . Students had to score an average of 4 on all exams taken and score of 4 or higher on at least eight exams. These students have qualified for at least 24 hours of college credit- the equivalent of full year of college coursework, in many cases.

27% of the senior class at West High School qualified for college credit by earning a 3 or above on at least one AP Exam (record high). Morristown West High School had 508 AP Exams taken last year and 72% of those exams earned college credit. This is compared to 60% by the state and 61% nationally.

The faculty and staff of Morristown West High School are proud of this accomplishment in light of the fact that in seven years we have moved from 4 AP class offerings to 21 AP class offerings and have gone from no AP Scholars to 48 AP Scholars. This would not have been possible without the support and the encouragement of the board of education and the hard work and dedication of the teachers of West High School.
