Summer Reading List

Summer Reading List

AP English Language and Composition Supplemental Reading List

Directions:  In addition to the regular course readings, students will need to choose two books, one from each least below, as supplemental reading.  While this activity is a replacement for Prerequisite Reading, it does not have to be done before classes begin in the fall; however, students might want to use their break to work ahead on the reading and accompanying assignments.

Students will be expected to read the book in its entirety and complete three projects from the “50 Alternatives to the Book Report” article for each book.  Students should not choose any of the same projects for both books.  In other words, students will end up having completed six of the fifty projects listed in the article.  Each student needs to use his or her knowledge of the book to select projects that suit the text.  The reading and the projects are due on the date listed below.

Nonfiction—Due October 26, 2016

Walden by Henry David Thoreau

Growing Up by Russell Baker

Hiroshima by John Hersey

My Losing Season by Pat Conroy

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass

Fiction—Due February 22, 2017

The Awakening by Kate Chopin

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Native Son by Richard Wright
